  • Pima County Uses PHIG to Drive Equity Through Human-Centered Design

The Pima County Health Department is reshaping public health through a Human-Centered Design (HCD) approach that actively involves the community in program creation. Supported by PHIG funding, the department introduced HCD training courses for staff and partnered with Greater Good Studio to guide three teams in addressing key issues like tobacco prevention, mental health, and racial health. These teams, composed of staff and community members, are co-designing program improvements to reflect real needs and challenges. By early 2025, these efforts will result in community-led program changes and a sustainable HCD toolkit to guide future initiatives.

  • Streamlining Disease Case Reporting in Arizona

The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) implemented a batch case creation process for Electronic Case Reporting (eCR), integrating over 7,400 records into the state’s surveillance system, MEDSIS, as of October 18, 2024. Funded by PHIG, this innovation reduces the reporting burden on healthcare providers and improves data entry efficiency, allowing quicker public health responses. The initiative enhances community health by facilitating timely interventions and better resource allocation, with plans to expand eCR to include other diseases like mpox and measles.
