  • Guam DPHSS Streamlines Agency Processes with PHIG Support

    The Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) is leveraging PHIG and the Department of the Interior’s Technical Assistance Program to target government-wide business process improvement efforts. In November 2024, partners from both initiatives came together with a wide array of Guam health agency staff to map out agency recruitment processes and timelines, identify bottlenecks, and define the next steps to streamline health agency processes. This initiative is an excellent example of how jurisdictions can use PHIG dollars to support collaborative, effective, and efficient government systems for improved population health outcomes.

  • Hawaii DOH Advances Accreditation Prep, Quality Improvement Work with PHIG

    The Hawaii Department of Health leveraged PHIG funding to prepare for PHAB accreditation, a milestone in advancing its culture of quality improvement. PHIG is also supporting the development of a performance management dashboard, enhancing transparency and progress tracking for quality improvement initiatives. Participation in peer networks has provided valuable insights into best practices, aligning accreditation efforts with strategic planning to ensure lasting benefits for the department and the community. Pending approval of an Accreditation/Strategic Planning Coordinator position will further sustain these achievements.

  • Washington’s Equity-Focused Leadership Model Enhances Public Health

    The Washington Department of Health (DOH) leveraged PHIG funding to create a leadership competency model prioritizing equity and employee wellbeing. Based on feedback from over 260 employees, the model sets clear expectations for people leaders and aligns leadership development with agency values and goals. This multi-year, employee-driven initiative will introduce professional development tools in November 2024 and new training opportunities in 2025, ensuring accessible pathways for leadership growth. Senior leaders have demonstrated strong support through testimonials and upcoming panels, highlighting the program’s potential to foster a more inclusive and effective public health culture.

  • Palau Developed Non-Communicable Disease Strategic Roadmap with PHIG Support

    The Ministry of Health & Human Services - Republic of Palau hosted a Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Progress Dissemination and Strategic Planning Workshop in April 2024 to guide the creation of an NCD strategic roadmap for 2025-2030. The workshop brought together community and government agency leaders and was co-facilitated by national PHIG partners ASTHO and NNPHI. As U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands face some of the world’s highest rates of chronic disease, Palau’s commitment to engaging community stakeholders, defining clear measures of success, and defining a path forward is a source of hope.

  • CNMI’s Healthcare Corporation Kickstarts Strategic Planning with PHIG Funds

    The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation (CHCC) is using PHIG funds to kickstart strategic planning. In February 2024, CHCC staff and PHIG technical assistance national partners came together to assess CHCC’s readiness for strategic planning efforts and create the support structures (e.g., committees, charters, and timelines) to facilitate success. As of November 2024, DMI-specific and CHCC-wide strategic planning efforts are underway, with a complementary workforce effort set to begin in 2025. These PHIG-funded efforts complement CHCC’s ongoing Community Health Assessment, Community Health Improvement Plan, and routine quality improvement efforts. Grounded in community-centered and collaborative planning processes, CNMI has a clear path ahead.

  • American Samoa Builds Workforce Advisory Board with PHIG Assistance

    The American Samoa Department of Health is drafting its Workforce Development Plan. Through PHIG technical assistance, ASTHO’s Islands Team met in person with the American Samoa team in September 2024 to discuss the plan and process of developing a Workforce Advisory Board and nominating members to the board to finalize and approve the plan. The American Samoa team has obtained strong leadership buy-in, and the Director has appointed internal and external partners to the Workforce Advisory Board.
