SUMMARY:Hot Topics — Nothing About Us Without Us: Participatory Evaluation in Public Health Practice
DESCRIPTION:Participatory evaluation is increasingly recognized as a critical approach for producing relevant\, ethical\, and actionable public health evidence: particularly in work with communities disproportionately impacted by structural inequities. This session introduces participatory evaluation as both a methodology and a practice stance\, highlighting how it has been applied in peer-led overdose prevention research through Research with Expert Advisors on Drug Use (READU). In the May 2026 session of Hot Topics in Practice\, presenter Jenna Van Draanen\, PhD\, MPH\, an Interdisciplinary Assistant Professor at the University of Washington who works in the area of behavioral health and substance use research\, will draw on real-world examples from local evaluations to explain how participatory approaches shift traditional notions of rigor\, expertise\, and success. By viewing this webinar\, participants will better understand common tensions faced in local government and funder-driven contexts\, including balancing accountability to predefined outcomes with the relational and process-oriented work required for meaningful participation.

SUMMARY:Public Health Communications for Impact: Approaches to Strengthening Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Effective communication is not just about messaging. It depends on strong systems\, resourcing\, and coordination behind the scenes. As health departments face increasing demands to demonstrate impact\, communicate value\, and navigate complex environments\, communications stands as a foundational public health capability. \nThis webinar will explore how public health agencies can strengthen their communications infrastructure to improve reach\, effectiveness\, and sustainability. Join us for an introduction to the Public Health Communications Collaborative’s newly published Overcoming Challenges & Leveraging Strengths: Action Guide for Communicators at Public Health Agencies\, which outlines evidence‑based strategies for organizing and operating effective public health communications functions. \nHealth department panelists will then share real‑world examples of how these approaches show up in practice by highlighting systems\, roles\, and processes that support clear communication about public health programs and investments. Together\, the session will reinforce communications as intentional\, resourced work that underpins successful public health practice. \nObjectives \nBy the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nExplain the core components of an effective public health communications infrastructure.\nExplore approaches for communicating the impact of public health programs and investments.\nReinforce communications as foundational public health capabilities that require intentional resourcing\, systems\, and cross‑program coordination.\n\nMeet the Speaker:  \n\nAmanda Kwong\, MPH\, Director\, Public Health Communications Collaborative\nde Beaumont Foundation\nMaura Fitzgerald\, Chief Marketing Officer\, Connecticut Department of Public Health\nChristina Floyd\, MPH\, Deputy Public Health Director\, City of Detroit Health Department

SUMMARY:Framing & Writing about the Root Causes of Health: Explanatory Chains in Practice
DESCRIPTION:This is Part 2 of LPHI’s Turning Vision Into Impact Series: Explanatory Chains. Building on the Public Health Power Skills webinar\, this session dives deeper into how we write and frame public health issues to advance equity. SUMMARY:Harnessing AI to Strengthen Public Health Systems through Smart Deployment
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping how public health organizations analyze data\, improve systems\, design interventions\, and deliver services. While AI offers powerful opportunities to strengthen public health practice\, it can also introduce organizational disruption and\, if implemented without care\, lead to ineffective or even harmful strategies. \nIn this webinar\, the Public Health Foundation and Riester will discuss the important planning and implementation steps prior to and following the deployment of AI. Speakers will walk through a real-world immunization program example demonstrating how AI can be used to examine and project trends\, integrate evidence with local context (such as cultural norms\, demographics\, and community narratives)\, inform strategy development\, and recommend potential areas for process improvements and workforce training. This webinar will also explore how quality improvement and performance management methods can be paired with AI for selecting and improving public health strategies and interventions. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe the planning steps prior to and after deploying AI in an organization\nExplain how AI can be used as a tool to improve a public health program\nExplore ways to use quality improvement and performance management to enhance what AI produces\n\nFeatured Speakers: \n\nRon Bialek\, President and CEO\, Public Health Foundation\nJack Moran\, Senior Advisor\, Artificial Intelligence and Quality\, Public Health Foundation\nAlan Perkel\, Chief Digital Officer\, Riester
