SUMMARY:Systems Thinking in Action: Mental Models as Leverage Points for Change
DESCRIPTION:In today’s complex public health landscape\, solutions are rarely just technical – they are shaped by beliefs\, assumptions\, and experiences we carry with us. Building on the foundations introduced in the Systems Thinking in Action webinar hosted in July 2025\, this second session invites public health professionals to step back and take a closer look at mental models – the often unseen ways of thinking that influence how systems are designed\, maintained\, and changed. \nMany public health practitioners use systems thinking in their work\, even if they don’t always call it that. This webinar creates space to slow down\, reflect\, and intentionally explore how mental models shape decision-making\, relationships\, and outcomes across public health systems. By making these models visible\, participants can identify powerful leverage points for meaningful and sustainable change. This session is designed to be both reflective and practical. Participants will develop a shared understanding of what mental models are\, how they are formed\, and why recognizing them is essential to systems change. Through a combination of didactic content and a moderated panel discussion\, attendees will hear real-world examples from experienced public health professionals working in a variety of roles. Panelists will share how surfacing and shifting mental models has influenced their work\, both the challenges and the successes.

SUMMARY:Strengthening Academic Health Department Partnerships: Workforce Pathways in California
DESCRIPTION:Join ASTHO and the Public Health Foundation (PHF) for an insightful webinar exploring the power of academic health department (AHD) partnerships. \nIn this session\, participants will gain a foundational understanding of AHD partnerships and hear how Public Health Institute (PHI) Center for Health Leadership & Impact\, supported by The California Endowment\, developed the California Academic Health Department (CAHD) initiative. \nThe CAHD initiative successfully bridged the gap between local health departments and academic programs of public health to create a structured workforce pathway system. By connecting emerging graduates with meaningful applied experience\, they’ve built a sustainable system for transitioning new professionals into public health careers. Join us to learn proven strategies for building academic-practice partnerships that cultivate a workforce ready to serve their communities. \nLearning objectives: \n1. Identify three key features of a successful workforce pathway program. \n2. Describe strategies to build lasting partnerships between academic institutions and health departments to improve employment outcomes. \nMeet the Speakers: \n\nKarya Lustig\, MA\, ISS\, Director\, PHI Center for Health Leadership & Impact\nAmy Max\, MPH\, Division Director\, PHI Center for Health Leadership & Impact\nMayela Arana\, MPH\, CPH\, CHES\, Senior Program Manager\, Workforce Development\, PHF\n\nNote: Registrants will need to log in or create a free ASTHO account. \nQuestions? For more information about this webinar\, please contact Mayela Arana at marana@phf.org. \nWant More? Join the AHD Learning Community to be notified of future webinars or visit the AHD Learning Community online to explore previous webinars and other freely available resources to support developing and enhancing AHD partnerships. \n*** \nThe AHD Learning Community brings together public health and healthcare professionals to share AHD knowledge and experiences and work collaboratively to create resources and tools to support the development\, maintenance\, and expansion of AHD partnerships. The AHD Learning Community is an initiative of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice. SUMMARY:QI in Practice
DESCRIPTION:Quality improvement is often talked about\, but harder to apply in day-to-day work. Quality Improvement in Practice is an interactive workshop that focuses on what QI actually looks like in real public health and healthcare settings. \nUsing the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Model for Improvement and the Plan–Do–Study–Act (PDSA) cycle\, participants will practice using three core questions to clarify goals\, identify meaningful measures\, and test small changes. The workshop emphasizes learning and experimentation\, particularly when the root cause or solution isn’t yet clear. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of QI and a concrete idea they can apply in their own work.
